Work Experience at Hive IT
At Hive IT, we hold 2 work experience weeks each year, each for a maximum 5 secondary school students per week.
In 2027 we already know that one of our work experience weeks will be the 5th - 9th July. We are aware that other work experience weeks take place, usually around February, but this date has not yet been confirmed.
About our work experience
At Hive we run our work experience placements a little differently. Our work experience aims to give students an overview of all elements of a digital agency so they can understand the wide variety of opportunities within the digital profession.
The weeks work experience typically follows this format:
Day 1: You'll cover some standard stuff like reading our policies, health and safety and risk assessments. You'll be given an overview of Hive and the work we do, how you'll spend your time with us and you'll be given your project brief which will run throughout the week. We'll also introduce you to the things you would need to think about from a Delivery Management perspective. In the afternoon, you'll start to learn about the process of Design thinking and how this plays a part in the design of digital solutions.
Day 2: You'll be spending time with our User Research and Design team, exploring User Research and interaction design, potentially doing some sketching
Day 3: Now with the development team, you'll look at project initialising and begin to build your design. Whether you're a coder or not, you can build something from scratch or use a simple CMS. We don't expect you to complete a project within this time and anything you start will likely remain unfinished.
Day 4: Continuing with the development team and your build, you'll also get a presentation from the QA team to understand how testing fits in to the process.
Day 5: We'll run through a retrospective on your time with Hive and we'll ask you to prep a group presentation on your time with Hive/what you've created, which you will then give to the whole company and we'll say thank you and goodbye.
You'll be working collaboratively at times with other members of the work experience cohort, and you'll also have some independent work.
We dont expect students to complete a single project and we accept applications from people of all digital skills levels. We try to make the week as accessible as possible and all we ask is that students listen, participate and enjoy themselves.
For students who are selected we require them to attend an hour long remote video call 1 week prior to the work experience so that we can get to know them a little better and they can virtually meet each other.

The closing date for applications for the July placement is the 8th January 2027.
Following this, we will review the submitted applications and inform students of the outcome by the end of February 2027. We would encourage you to continue applying to multiple placements so that you have a back up option.
